  • Scenic stairways connecting the village.
  • Luxury boutiques and local craft shops.

The Ancient Legend of “Posa Posa”

The name Positano is linked to a fascinating event from the XII Century. Legend says a ship carrying a Byzantine icon of the Virgin Mary and Child was caught in a terrible storm offshore.

The sailors reportedly heard a mysterious voice saying “Posa, Posa” (meaning “stop, stop”) coming from the representation of the Virgin. Taking this as a divine sign, the sailors landed in the small fishing village and delivered the icon to the locals. In her honor, the inhabitants built the Church of Saint Mary of Assumption right by the beach.

The Vertical Pyramid of the Amalfi Coast

Due to its iconic urban structure, Positano is famously called “the vertical Pyramid of the Amalfi Coast”. It is a city to explore strictly on foot: only by climbing its numerous stairways can you discover its true essence and the breathtaking views that have made it famous worldwide.
