The Glorious History and Legends of Amalfi
As an Ancient Maritime Republic, Amalfi is one of the most famous cities of the Amalfi Coast. Thanks to its natural beauty and its historical and artistic patrimony, in 1997 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
According to an old tale, the god Hercules fell in love with a beautiful woman named Amalfi; however, she died prematurely. Afterwards, Hercules decided to bury her body here and honor the city with her name.
Legends aside, Amalfi holds Roman origins: the city turned its maritime activity into a relevant source of profit. After the IX century, Amalfi obtained independence and joined the battle against the other Maritime Republics:
- Pisa
- Venice
- Genoa
In 1137, the city was looted by the military forces of Pisa, leading to its decline as a trading power. However, it shone in new splendor during the Italian Romanticism, when intellectuals and travelers from Northern Europe rediscovered its unique environment.
Architectural Treasures and Piazza Duomo
The historical center is easy to access through typical alleys leading from the coastal area to the upper side, named Valle delle Ferriere. In Piazza Duomo, the city’s main square, you will find the majestic Cathedral dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle.
The religious complex includes several wonders:
- The Basilica of The Crucifix (dating back to the IX century).
- Saint Andrew’s Crypt, which preserves the remains of the Saint.
- The Cloister of Paradise, an ancient monumental cemetery.
- The Saint Andrew’s Fountain (built in 1760), also known as the “People’s fountain”.
